Problems with Gentoo stage 1 install

First time using Gentoo. getting to www servers from inside where they have an Internal IP

The goal is to have an internal webserver: - DONE - running on a high numbered port - DONE - firewall forwards 80->7777 on webserver - DONE - external hits on www.blah.com served by the httpserver - ???? - internal/intranet also can hit the webserver as www.blah.com The problem is that www.blah.com resolves to the external internet IP and then gets routed out of the firewall which does not come back in and get forwarded to the internal webserver. It would be ideal if internal web browser hits went straight to the internal server. I know this will work if i setup the host/domain www.blah.com on internal dns so it resolves to the internal server IP. It would also probably work with some fancy proxy config pac for the proxy setup in IE/Firefox. The DNS solution is high maintenance (hosts change quite often for business reasons). The proxy pac is, from what i understand fallen in disfavor and a bit of a pain to admin and keep working over both IE and Firefox. Proxy pac's also require an internal website to get them from in the config. We need to minimize user involvement in setup and also minimize overhead. Any tips? anyone doing this now and care to share their solutions? Any alternative approaches or ways to accomplish what is needed? ===============network Internal workstations (10.x.x.x) Internal webserver:7777 (10.x.x.x) Squid Proxy : 8080 ^ | intranet | =========|== firewall w/ NAT == internet | | V The Ugly World web browsers hit firewall on :80 ===============/network == proxies and http I am using a squid proxy on host:proxyhttp:8080 that is not transparent (ie: needs the proxy manually configured in the web browsers). This is because transparent proxies don't work for ports other than 80, unless they are configured for each outgoing http port, which then always goes via squid and cannot be used for any other purpose. Ran into this when trying to hit a CPanel at a web hoster that was on some high numbered port.

Layer 4 switch from IPtables - setup for transparent proxy

Any way to use IP tables and squid for a transparent proxy but only for http. Basically, the setup for squid and a transparent proxy results in ALL traffic for a given port (usually 80) going to squid to be proxied. I am looking for a way to take any http traffic coming in on Any port and send it to squid. Thus http traffic on port 80 or 22 would go to squid while port 22 ssh traffic would be unaffected.

>From the Mepis.org site. They have seen ATI problems too. I don't remember seeing from you that you definitely had an ATI or a Intel i810, but here you go. Was a Mepis and a Debian problem with an official ATI driver. <block quote> 5. ATI card may not be allowing users to power off their machines or switch users properly. This seems to only be a problem after installing the official ATI driver. This has not been found to be a problem with the free xorg driver. We have included a new version of te driver in this release and we dont know what is causing the issue. It could be anything from the new driver having a bug or how MEPIS has compiled the kernel module and included everything. *UPDATE* The version of the ATI fglrx driver that we were using had this symptom as a known issue. After finding this we found that Norbert Tretkowski of Debian has patched the ATI driver to fix this problem. We have tested this in house and it appears to have successfully fixed the problem. Thanks to Norbert for getting this to work.

Screen Goes Black after running Xserver

Hello Everyone; I have a problem running Debian on a Acer TravelMate 260 laptop: The system boots up and I can login in the command prompt and change to different screens (ctrl-alt-f1 to f7). But, Once I startx I CANNOT change screens. I know I can "kill" X by pressing ctrl-alt-backspace but when I do this the monitor just goes black and I cannot do anything else. The only choice I have here is to ctrl alt del and restart the system. I've done some searches in google but no help. I am running: kernel 2.6.15 on a Acer TravelMate 260 Laptop; 1Ghz over 200 Meg of ram Debian 3.0 Thanks in advance for your help. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? pros/cons of running services from inetd vs standalone daemons

Any opinions on the reasons to run services from inetd vs leaving them running as daemons? The main thing that comes to mind is for busy services like an MTA/email or Samba there is less overhead because there aren't alot of processes being spawned / forked.

Disappointed in Google

Is anyone else really disappointed in Google recently? Do no evil my ass. Don't get me wrong, I love Google (or used to anyway, I'm on the fence now) but this Google Pack <http://pack.google.com/> stuff is really pathetic. Norton and RealPlayer?! I would only put that on the system of my worst enemy. I do realize Google is getting paid for this service by some of these companies but does that really fit the "do no evil" slogan? That's not the only thing. Its a mass of things that Google has done wrong and this one finally sent me over the edge. As you can see I use gmail despite it being sub par compared to other free services and now executable are blocked in email attachments. Thanks Google. It's nice that you are trying to protect the newbies but at the very least give me the option to disable it. It is MY email! Development has been crappy to say the least. I still remember reading an article on Google Rumors <http://www.googlerumors.com/>about the possibility of a calendar. Still isn't here. I am not saying that I am completely expected one since it was never official and that Google is a free service that I am not paying for, thus they can provide what they want, but its been a while since Google has done anything worth while for their users. I realize this is a Linux mailing list and that most of Google's software is for Windows XP but I still want to hear your opinion on the matter. Is this the beginning of the end? Is Google finally following in the footsteps of their older brothers and becoming corrupt? Ok ok... Maybe I am looking into it too much, but it just seems lacking. Google is still good in other areas though. There support for open source and the summer of code project is a great idea! I feel that Google should set sights on doing a service and doing it well. There search is second to none. For the other stuff.... well, a little more time creating a quality product would do them and everyone else a lot better instead of trying to move on to other projects. Am I going overboard or ranting to much or do you agree with me. So many intelligent computer users (read slashdotters) have built up Google to be a god and to some it would seem sinful to bash Google in any light. Any thoughts?

I like that they strive towards that, but I like options to be available to the average or above average geek who wants to do more. Most LiveCDs end up in this situation and come up with some sort of modules or a fork of project.
