Sigh. I was being lazy, I'll admit it. I had at least done a quick scan of
the man page, and missed the relevant portion. In penance, I will explain:
I have a Keyboard-Video-Mouse (KVM) switch that uses Ctrl-Alt-Shift then a
number to switch consoles. Invariably, I find myself pressing
Ctrl-Alt-Delete instead, and rebooting the server. So I wanted to change
the "ca::ctrlaltdel..." entry in /etc/inittab to allow myself to recover
(shutdown -t5 -r +1), and having already taken the server down once
unscheduled didn't want to have to reboot to load the new command.
The answer I was looking for, by the way, was "init q", which I got out of
some helpfile I can't seem to find again.
You can use either "init" or "telinit" interchangeably. To understand why,
I do recommend actually reading the most excellent man page - one of the
better man pages I've seen.
Thanks!
