The position involves what should be a lot of time on the road doing installations of game systems and supporting of Linux servers. Estimate that travel stints could go out for 3 weeks straight at times for international installs. Most trips out should be less than a week. Must not have criminal record, i.e. the international trips and crossing borders means that you don't want to be refused entry into foreign countries for a DUI or Drug charge. The required skills will be general knowledge of Linux, TCP/IP switches, routers and wireless products and infrastructure in general. Must know PC hardware, some bash and perl would be a plus. FYI Work is in the eatertainment industry which means a lot of support occurs Friday night, Saturday and Sunday. I hope this did not violate any posting rules. Thanks.

Postfix config doubts

Hi all, I currently have configured a RedHat Linux box with postfix,courier-imap and mysql to host virtual email accounts. Can any one let me know how do I setup 'Quota' limit for postfix virtual users. Currently i have two options, either we can use Maildrop, to implement this, or we can use VDA. I want to know if there is anyother option to achive the 'Per User Quota' in the above combination. Note: All virtual users are under one uid and gid. Chris, Thanks for the suggestion. I've looked hard at Helix and Darwin Streaming Server, but am hesitant to bite just yet. I like StreamStudio, but it appears to be a dead project, and I may have to default back to Darwin or Helix. My main concern lies in that so many of the streaming solutions assume you are doing a true capture thru a capture card, or file serving a feed. I'm trying to do something different in that I'm focusing on a live feed, with as little lag as possible. The live connection puts in a set of issues that I just don't see addressed that often. From my reading, I'm hoping to use a camcorder with a Firewire (IEEE 1394) connection to do the heavy encoding lifting. One of my real questions is how much processor load will I realize by converting from the DV combined audio/video format to something like quicktime, thedora, real, whatever. Will having a capture card with embedded decode on it help? If so, how much? I am hoping that the CPU hit will be less for a conversion than a true encoding, but it's hard to say. The reason I want to lean so much on the dv/1394 solution is that it's a lot easier to find camcorders to borrow than dig up four capable encode/decode capture cards. But those two links I've already bookmarked after browsing thru and will read them in much better detail. I have no doubt the forums will provide me a wealth of information, and I can't thank you enough for the leads. It seems almost anymore that even as good as the search engines are, a lot of the deep forums aren't indexed anymore. Whether or not it's from neglect by the search engines, or that the forum owners don't want the deep linking I don't know. At the end of the day I'd love to use a more well known, possibly stabler solution than an unknown one (StreamStudio), and Darwin Streaming Server has a lot of attention and admiration. Ed is right. I would've responded sooner, but I was off work for a week and have been buried in email and work all week. Remember to upgrade to 1.4.6. If you have a 1.4.0 or 1.4.2, this is a multi-step upgrade. You must get 1.4.3 and 1.4.4 on and then reboot. Then add 1.4.5 and 1.4.6 and reboot. The reboots are for the kernel upgrades. If you plan on making big changes, get the 1.4.6 .iso file and sove yourself the trouble of the upgrades. If you have a ton of custom firewall rules that you have put in to block sites or attackers, then keep the current install, change the config and do the upgrades. Anyone done a live video broadcast thru Linux?

Greetings all, I've helping to put together a conference next year at the Airport Marriott and would like to live stream some of the breakout sessions over the net. I can find all sorts of file served broadcast solutions, but finding a live solution is something else, especially coupled with the firewire and miniDV format. Hardware I envision is 4 camcorders, for the video signal, running into 4 linux boxes. The linux box's primary purpose would be to convert the DV format to something streamable (Thedora, quicktime, Real, something) and send it to a central (on site) server. This central server would then send the converted signal to a paid for remote server that would actually serve the signals to the audience. It would also serve at least one other box that would serve as registration, and possibly one more if we wanted to handle live questions (via email) from the internet audience. As some of the sessions will be panel discussions, I'll be running them thru a mixer, then running into the linux box, but that shouldn't be that big of a deal. With the camcorders doing the heavy lifting of encoding, I wouldn't think I'd need much in the way of processing power, but that's one of the things I need to figure out. Especially CPU load in converting from DV to something else. Although the Marriott only has a single T1 line, I think I can get an acceptable signal to the audience. Your thoughts on possible solutions and potential pitfalls would be appreciated. Dave

If you cannot evaluate the competition's software/applications side-by-side it is not a very good comparison. Also, admit it, the majority of people on this list are well above average when it comes to technical acumen. If Linux is to really catch on like wildfire as a desktop replacement then is really should become a universal OS. It will need to run any desktop application from any desktop OS. Think about it this way - If you moved to Florida (or your favorite location) and the requirements to live there were that you HAD to paint your house a specific set of colors, it had to be build a certain way, and you had to wear reed skirts with a tank top and flip-flops only a few people would find that appealing. Now, it the clothing and housing restrictions were removed, move people would live there. Pretty much the same thing when it comes to the desktop environment. Please note, I am making a distinction here. Desktop vs. Server. My two pence. - Michienne
