CCG Set for sale

Forward as necessary. Don't know if anyone plays CCGs here, but I have a original Star Wars CCG Introductionary Two Player kit, complete with Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader cards "Not found anywhere else." I've checked prices on this kit on the market, and most card buyers say this is wroth $50 or more, so if anyone's game for this kit, it's available. I think what he was saying was that he would eBay a computer rather than give it away on freecycle, or any other means. I was saying that some PCs are old enough and heavy enough that unless you did something with it locally, you wouldn't get someone to pay you enough for the trouble and pay enough to ship the heavy box of old parts. Polls re: new linux distribution

Since the list has been slow lately, I figured I'd try to stir up some conversation/debate by asking a few questions. :) First a quick note. I'm an LFSer (Linux From Scratch) when I'm not using OpenSUSE. I've often thought of making some of my LFS packages available to the community, but haven't because of the nature of LFS. Anyway, I was thinking more about that tonight and decided to ask the list some questions. If you were to start a new linux distribution, what would you use for package management? rpm? dpkg? none (tar.bz2s)? portage? roll your own? What about managing dependencies and fetching packages from remote repositories? yast? apt? smart? yum? urpmi? portage? What architectures / hardware would you support? ppc? alpha? x86 / x86_64? On multilib capable arches (such as x86_64), would you support both 32 and 64 bit, or go 64 bit only? Would you go the way of Ubuntu, and work around Gnome mainly? Or the way SuSE traditionally was, and be mostly KDE oriented? There we go, I think that might get the ball rolling. :) Rich

interesting PC recycling

I became a member of Freecycle a few months ago to get some stuff for my new duplex. I've since seen a few used monitors offered there and a few days ago, an old Compaq desktop with DamnSmallLinux pre-installed. I thought you guys might find that an interesting way to introduce new people to Linux, as well as a way to donate old hardware to someone in need. I would still offer stuff up to the KCLUG group first, since I personally know many of you, but for items that this group is not interested in, I'd put out on Freecycle maillist. Oren was bending my ear at the last meeting about LiveCDs and installs for old PCs, for donations and charity work. My recommendation stands with DamnSmallLinux and Puppy Linux. I believe both can save/restore sessions to USB pen drives or to remaining tracks on CD-R and RW disks that had ISO written as multi-session, if the PC has a CDRW drive. They then can use some unionfs, file overlays and possibly voodoo to restore settings, /home directories, add-on programs that have been downloaded, etc. Or either distro would easily and quickly install to even a small HDD, like a 1 GB or less. 64 MB is probably a realistic minimum RAM for these with a Pentium CPU (More RAM is always better, especially if ran as a LiveCD, up to 1GB). One other good use is a Linux Firewall using IPCop. There are many cheap and easy integrated firewall, switch, router, wireless APs out there, but for someone looking to learn some network security, IPCop is a viable option for more of this old hardware. Again, Pentium CPU and 32MB on up. Way more if you want to have a bunch of VPN connections, but I run on 64MB and a 2GB HDD. Just passing on info to get a little more useful life out of some of this hardware that is gathering dust in our basements.

KCLUG CSS

To clarify, This is not a standards war. This is not about KCLUG website re-design. This is about seeing what you can do with CSS Design. I merely chose KCLUG website as an exercise option. Feel free to use CSS Garden instead. Often KCLUG members (those in the boonies) do not get to see what their counterparts are doing in the field. This is an opportunity to show your stuff, to share, etc. I am curious and waiting with anticipation to see what CSS designs come out of the exercise. It is a design exercise for fun. ah, yes and #11. Your CSS should be posted on the list under Creative Commons License
