Thin Clients

I've been asked by a one of my clients if I could come up with a thin client that will automatically access a remote desktop session after logon. I know it is possible, how hard is it to setup? Also I would need to limit internet access to only approved websites (this would be for a mixed OS environment but would like to use Linux as a solution). - Michienne

No Mandriva CD's

Customs aparently considers Mandriva One CD's to be a dangerous terrorist threat, we will not have any for ITEC. Mandriva says they'll try again for our next event (probly ITEC 2007).

1U Rackmount servers for sale

Some of you may know of Kozoru. Some of you may know that they are in hard times. Thus, they are selling their cluster nodes. I can have one in your hand for $200. A good friend of mine worked there until a few months ago, and we are looking to turn around some of the machines. Here is what he had to say about them: It's been a while (March or so) since I threw one together but I know they're P4 Celerons with 80GB PATA drives. I think all of them have 256MB (1 stick) of RAM but I know some of the DB Servers had two 256's in them. You might get lucky there. I *THINK* CPU speed is 2.8GHz but it might be slower. this is the only thing I can't remember about them from memory. On-board USB/Video/PS2 and 100BTX NIC. They're built in cheapish SuperMicro cases and they're pretty noisy, they use a big blower fan for the case, a small whiny low-profile blower fan on the copper heatsink, and the powersupply has its on set of fans. These ran 24/7 for damn near 2 years straight, we seldomnly had any problems with them (2 out of 100+ had power supplies die) They all boot off USB, so just add a USB DVD drive and install your OS of choice. He's got a post over at kcgeek.com that says the exact same thing. I think they are similar to <a href="http://www.supermicro.com/products/chassis/1U/512/SC512L.cfm">these 1U cases</a>, but I've never seen one in person, only photos. From what I've been told, they had been setup to boot a custom OpenBSD install from a 64MB USB key, and use the HDD for local data cache, storage, etc. when the cluster node was active. I can get them for pretty cheap. There are/were nearly 100 available. I don't have any idea how long these will last, as the (former?) Kozoru employees can get them even cheaper than I can. Where are the Ubuntu/Kubuntu CDs?

Monty and I are sitting here in the KCLUG booth (well, I'm sitting in the Sprint Internet kiosk), and we have a few KNOPPIX CDs leftover from last year and *no* Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Mandriva CDs to hand out. We have a big sign saying we have "Free Linux CDs" (which is currently turned to the wall). If anyone can burn off a couple dozen CDs (Ubuntu, KNOPPIX, whatever, anything) and come by ITEC, it will be very much appreciated. I'm pretty sure we will accept handwritten labels on the CDs. If you happen to have some CD sleeves or spare slimline jewel cases, that would be a bonus. If you haven't registered you can always look back through the E-mails for Chris Bier's ITEC E-mail (September 28th I think) and register as an Exhibitor, or just come by and have them send someone in to the booth, so we can come out and get them. Right now all we have to offer is my demo system playing that BBC FOSS video, the books, and some brochures and business cards. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? The Overland Park Trade Center is at approximately 110th and Lamar, right next to the Sheraton (really tall tower with a big red "Sheraton" or red "S" on the side of the building. ITEC Booth is a bit small this year.

I'm currently at the ITEC Exhibitor Hall, and it would appear that all our grand designs need to be scaled back a bit. The booth is a lot smaller this year from last year's booth. We are sharing a 15' wide by 10' deep booth (approximately) *with three other groups*. We might have room for one demo system. As I have no LCD monitors and can only bring in a 17" CRT, I think I'll bow out of the demo systems this year. I do have the BBC FOSS video (the one released under the Creative Commons license) on DVD and OGG video, which we could play on a demo system at the front of the booth. Color and sound attract more people than just people and informational literature. All we have to do is play the show credits every time and we fulfill the "attribution" requirement of their CC license. I have a reasonably large sign saying "Free Linux CDs!" which should attract attention. I'll set that up tonight along with the brochures and the cards, and I'll see all of you tomorrow. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! It Just Works! PCI TV card under Ubuntu.

I bought a cheap,old (ca 1996) Hauppauge card at S.E. a while ago. I didn't install it into a system for so long becuase I wasn't prepared for the work of getting it recognized and working. I've read a few How-Tos of getting various cards going. Ack! Yesterday I decided I had the time to play, so I just stuck it into my P3 850 Gateway E-4200 (another S.E. machine, with an S.E. CPU upgrade and RAM) and powered it up. To my suprise it found the card with the BTTV driver right away, and I didn't do a thing. I installed TVtime and of the basic choices, it's the cleaned and best TV program I've used. Wow! That was dang simple. My wife was even (happily!) suprised to see the "spare" machine doing something visibly useful. The only trick was figuring out which audio input I had plugged it into on my sound card. Audio-In is the 1/8" jack, and AUX is an internal header on the card. They didn't have any thing going through them and CD is obviously the wrong header. I was plugged into the 3rd header and there was an unchecked option in the Volume Control Prefs called "Volume" that when unmuted gave me sound. Great, now I just have to get TVtime to associate that with the card for volume control, and not the Line-In which is the external audio line, not the internal header ATA-ATA audio header. Odd. Jon.
