Booting a USB drive as an ATA device requires hardware support. I've forgotten exactly what controller, but I remember talking to Toshiba and asking if it would be possible to add support with a flash upgrade, and the answer was no, the hardware didn't support it. Gerald's reply reminded me that I'd faced the same issue using Rational Visual Test. There were 2 ways I found to get access to a console from a dialog based app. You can create a named pipe wrapper. Like I said, the size indicates they'd be double-sided, so it's just a question of whether they're bragging that you can use a double-sided disk and turn it over, or if they actually have dual heads and can read/write both sides without removing the disk. Format would be standard, so no need to worry about propietary hardare. These days I would think that you'd have a better chance of replacing that failed RAID controller from ebay or somewhere. Do a search of newsgroups for someone who has one and does/doesn't like it and offer to trade them straight up for a current Adaptec or something like that.

Any recommendations on how to maintain the attribs (user/group/perms/dates...) of files when they are burned to a cd/cdrw/dvdram, or copied to another partition, and later need to be restored to their original form? comments on how to handle links? thanks

D'Oh! Quickest way to stumble on something obvious: post a question about it to a list. 8.5GB DVD media is double-sided DVD+R. Double-sided DVD-R is 9.4GB. I wonder if there are drives that will write both sides as a continuous image?

anyone remember the file format, filesystem, of that stuff under windows, from roxio/adaptec, that lets you use a cdrw disk as a big slow floppy? what support is there for it in linux and how? Can it do rieser? ext2/3? iso9660? rockridge/joliet? thanks

Web Client Tracking

I have a client who wants to get a better idea of what path users take through his website, where they spend their time, what they're really interested in. He gets "Analog" and "Webalizer" reports, but those reflect the single-page-view perspective that HTML implies, and he wants session logs. (I don't think he's quite clear on how much information he's asking to digest, but anyway...) Anybody know of a package that breaks the stateless model of HTML and will give him the tracking he's after? Oh, one that acutally works would be nice. He found one that launched a new perl script for each new page view on the server, and when it hit something like 2039 parallel instances none of the other CGI stuff would work.
